Aquarium Heaters for Planted Tanks
A heater keeps tropical fish, shrimp and plants at a steady temperature when your room cools down. This page compares preset, adjustable and inline heaters by the tank sizes and features their makers publish.

What matters most
Match the maker's tank rating
Pick a heater whose rated tank size covers your tank. A cool room, an open top, or a nearby draft makes a heater work harder, so lean toward the upper end of the range if your room runs cold.
Preset or adjustable
Preset heaters hold one fixed temperature and suit most community tanks. Choose an adjustable model if you keep species that need cooler or warmer water than the preset.
Placement and flow
Mount the heater near the filter outlet or other water movement so warm water spreads evenly. Keep it fully submerged to the maker's marked level, and keep plants and hardscape from pressing against it.
Safety and build
Look for overheat or dry-run shut-off in the maker's specifications. Unplug any heater and let it cool before lifting it out of the water, and handle glass-bodied heaters gently during cleaning.
Check before you buy
- What size is my tank in gallons?
- What temperature do my fish, shrimp and plants need?
- Do I need to adjust the temperature, or is a preset fine?
- Is there water movement where the heater will mount?
- Do I want a display, or will I use a separate thermometer?
Skip a heater if your room stays within your livestock's range all year and you keep only cool-water species.
