Editorial standards
How we research, verify, label, and correct what we publish.
Research-based vs. hands-on
Every article is labeled. Research-based pages are built from sources we cite: manufacturer specifications and manuals, plant and equipment makers’ published guidance, scientific and extension resources, and established hobby practice. Hands-on pages describe our own use of a product or method, and only carry that label when we can say what we did. We never imply testing that did not happen.
How we choose products
- We start from compatibility: tank length and depth, growing style, mounting, and required accessories.
- We record each product’s exact brand, model, and variant, and check its specifications against the manufacturer’s documentation.
- We confirm the exact Amazon listing (ASIN) through Amazon’s official tools and record when we checked it.
- We only consider products that buyers rate well: 4 stars or higher on Amazon when we check. Ratings are a filter, not a verdict, and we don’t reproduce them on the site because they change.
- We explain who a product suits, who should skip it, and what else it needs.
- We don’t publish rankings or scores we can’t support, and we don’t make “best overall” claims.
Prices and availability
We don’t publish prices, discounts, or stock claims. They change constantly, so check the retailer for current information.
Commercial independence
Commission rates never decide what we recommend, and we don’t accept payment for placement. See our affiliate disclosure.
Dates and updates
“Published” is when a page first went live. “Updated” changes only when we make a meaningful change to the substance, never automatically.
Corrections
We review our guides against their sources and correct errors when we find them, updating the “Updated” date when the substance changes.
