Fluval Plant 3.0 vs Finnex Planted+ 3.0: Which LED Fits Your Tank?

How the Fluval Plant 3.0 and Finnex Planted+ 3.0 compare on tank-length fit, mounting, control, and published output, size by size.

The short answer

The biggest practical difference is control. The Fluval Plant 3.0 is programmed through the FluvalSmart Bluetooth app for a full 24-hour cycle, while the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 uses an inline controller with dimming and fixed 6, 9 or 12 hour timer presets and needs no phone. Pick by the size that fits your tank length first, then by how you want to schedule the light. Neither line is better for every tank.

What we compared

Both lines are bar-style LED fixtures sold in several lengths for planted tanks. We compared them on the criteria that decide whether a light works on a specific tank:

  • Tank-length fit. Each size covers a published bracket or mount range. Your tank's length should sit inside it, ideally not at the very edge.
  • Mounting. How the fixture attaches to the tank and what rim or glass it needs.
  • Control and scheduling. Dimming, timer options, and whether a phone app is required.
  • Published output. What each maker actually publishes, which is not the same measurement for both brands.
  • Other listed details. Water resistance, warranty, and power draw where the makers publish them.

All figures below come from Fluval's manuals and Finnex's product pages and comparison chart, listed in the sources. We have not tested these lights hands-on.

Matching sizes by tank length

The two lines are not cut to the same lengths, so the closest pairing depends on your tank:

Your tank lengthFluval Plant 3.0 sizeFinnex Planted+ 3.0 size
Under 24 in22 W (15-24 in)None of the sizes compared here covers this
About 24 in22 W (top of range) or 32 W (bottom of range)24 in (24-30 in)
About 30 in, such as a 20 long or 29 gal32 W (24-34 in)24 in, at the top of its 24-30 in range
31-34 in32 W (24-34 in)Finnex's chart lists mounts extending to 33.5 in, but the retail listing says 30 in; confirm before buying
36-45 in46 W (36-46 in)36 in (36-45 in)
About 48 in46 W: the manual states up to 48 in, the retail listing 46 in48 in (47-56 in)

A few points stand out. For tanks shorter than 24 in, only the Fluval 22 W among the sizes compared here fits. For a 36 in tank such as a 40 breeder, both lines have a size whose range starts right at 36 in. For a full 48 in tank, the Finnex 48 is designed for that length, while the Fluval 46 W depends on which published figure you trust, so measure carefully.

Output figures are not directly comparable

Finnex publishes PAR at depth: for example, the 24 in model lists 115 umol/m2/s at 12 in and 60 at 18 in, and the 36 in lists 135 at 12 in and 80 at 18 in. Fluval publishes wattage, LED count and luminous flux (for example 2350 lm for the 32 W), but no PAR chart. Lumens describe brightness to the human eye, not the light plants use, so you cannot line these numbers up against each other. Our light intensity guide explains why PAR at substrate depth is the more useful figure.

Choose the Fluval Plant 3.0 if

  • You want a programmable 24-hour cycle. The FluvalSmart app sets a full schedule over Bluetooth, which Fluval describes as suited to sunrise and sunset style ramping.
  • Your tank is under 24 in long. The 22 W size covers 15-24 in, a range none of the Finnex sizes compared here reaches.
  • Your tank is 31-34 in. The 32 W range covers it cleanly, while the Finnex 24 in may or may not reach depending on which published figure is correct.
  • Your tank has a frame or glass the brackets fit. The manual states the brackets sit on the outside of the frame on glass 3-15 mm thick.

Choose the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 if

  • You do not want to depend on a phone app. The inline controller handles 0-100% dimming, daylight and moonlight modes, and the Auto 24/7 Lunar+ timer on its own.
  • A 6, 9 or 12 hour preset fits your routine. Many low-tech and CO2 tanks run a photoperiod in this window, so presets may be all you need.
  • You want published PAR figures to plan around. Finnex lists PAR at 12 in and 18 in for every size, which helps if you are planning for a specific plant group or water depth.
  • Your tank is about 48 in long. The 48 in model's range starts at 47 in and runs to 56 in.
  • You want a listed water-resistance rating. Every Finnex size is rated IP67.

When neither is right

  • You need custom color-channel control. Finnex does not offer per-channel color control on this line. The Fluval offers a blue-only mode and app scheduling, but if you want to tune individual channels, look at other fixtures on the Plant lighting: what to check before you buy ↗ hub.
  • Your tank is wide front to back. Both are narrow bars. On a deep-front tank such as a 40 breeder, one bar may leave the back row dim; see our lighting guide before committing.
  • Your tank falls between sizes. If your length sits at the very edge of a range, or between two published figures, it is safer to choose a fixture whose range comfortably covers it.
  • You plan to hang the light. Finnex does not mention a hanging kit, and Fluval's manual describes bracket mounting only.

Compatibility and maintenance differences

Mounting. The Fluval uses extendable brackets placed on the outside of the aquarium frame and lists a 3-15 mm glass thickness. The Finnex rests on the tank rim with adjustable sliding mounts. If you have a rimless tank, check the glass thickness and how the mounts seat on bare glass edges before buying either; our rimless aquarium guide covers what to measure.

Scheduling. With the Fluval, the touch switch alone gives on/off, blue-only and manual dimming; scheduling needs the app. Per Fluval's manual, a dimming level set at the switch stays fixed until you change it. With the Finnex, scheduling is built in but limited to the three presets. If you want neither, either light can be run at a fixed setting from a plug-in timer, which our timers and schedules guide walks through.

Power and warranty. The Fluval sizes draw 22, 32 and 46 W and carry a 3-year limited warranty; the Finnex sizes draw 30, 45 and 58 W, and the Finnex sources we cite do not state a warranty term. Wattage alone does not tell you which is brighter at your substrate.

Long-term care. Both are LED fixtures with no tubes to replace. Fluval lists a rated LED life of 50,000 hours and that the LED source is not replaceable. For either light, keep the lens free of salt crust and condensation, keep the controller and power supply away from splashes, and make sure cords form a drip loop below the outlet.
