Best Planted Tank Lights for 48-Inch Tanks (55 and 75 Gallon) (2026)
Catalog lights listed to fit a 48-inch tank, such as a common 55 or 75 gallon, with notes on depth, width, fit edges, and controls.

Two of the lights we have checked are listed to fit a tank about 48 inches long. The Finnex Planted+ 3.0 48 in covers 47 to 56 inches, publishes PAR at 12 and 18 inches, and has a built-in timer with no app. The Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Pro (36-48 in) reaches 48 inches at the top of its range and adds remote-programmed sunrise, sunset, and color control. The Fluval Plant 3.0 46 W tops out at about 46 inches on its retail listing, so we do not list it for a 48-inch tank. On a wide 75 gallon, plan for two fixtures if you want even coverage front to back.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for keepers lighting a planted tank about 48 inches long. The two most common tanks of that length are the 55 and 75 gallon:
| Tank | Typical dimensions (L x W x H) | What it means for lighting |
|---|---|---|
| 55 gallon | about 48 x 13 x 21 in | Long and narrow; one bar can cover the width, but the tank is tall |
| 75 gallon | about 48 x 18 x 21 in | Same length but much wider; one narrow bar may leave the front or back dim |
These are typical dimensions, not a standard. Brands, rimless versions, and older tanks vary, so measure your tank's outside length, front-to-back width, and height before ordering. A light's fit range is about the length its mounts can span, so a tank an inch or two off "48" can land outside a range.
Both tanks are about 21 inches tall, taller than a 20 long or a 40 breeder. Light weakens with distance from the fixture, so on a tall tank the PAR published for the deeper measuring point matters most. Our light intensity guide explains how to read PAR at depth.
The picks suit low-tech and CO2-injected tanks. Demanding carpets in a 21-inch-tall tank generally need more light at the substrate than easy epiphytes and crypts; our lighting guide walks through matching light to plants.

- No app or per-channel color control
Best for: A 48-inch tank where you want published PAR figures and a simple built-in timer, with no phone app.
Skip this if: You want app control, custom color channels, or a photoperiod outside 6, 9, or 12 hours without adding a plug-in timer.
Exact model: Finnex Planted+ 3.0, model PL-48S.
Fit: The fixture body is 46.26 inches and reaches 56.26 inches with the mounts extended, per Finnex's dimension chart, so it fits tanks from about 47 to 56 inches. A 48-inch tank sits near the bottom of that range, so the light body covers almost the full length. It rests on the rim with adjustable sliding mounts; no hanging kit is mentioned by the manufacturer.
Output and controls: A plant-specific light. Finnex lists 58 W, PAR of 145 umol/m2/s at 12 inches and 90 at 18 inches, 660 nm deep red LEDs, and CRI above 92. On a tank about 21 inches tall, the substrate sits much closer to the 18-inch figure than the 12-inch one. The inline controller gives 0 to 100 percent dimming, daylight and moonlight modes, and an Auto 24/7 Lunar+ cycle with 6, 9, or 12 hour presets.
Dimensions: 46.26 x 2.34 x 1.30 inches.
Maintenance: IP67 rated. Keep the controller away from splashes, and add a plug-in timer if you want a photoperiod outside the presets.

Best for: A 48-inch tank where you want programmable sunrise and sunset, adjustable day and moonlight color, and control from a remote rather than an app.
Skip this if: You want published PAR figures before buying, or your tank measures even slightly over 48 inches.
Exact model: Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Pro, part 4012, the 36 to 48 inch size.
Fit: Listed for tanks 36 to 48 inches, so a 48-inch tank is at the very top of the range. Measure first. The fixture itself is 34.8 x 3.5 x 0.44 inches, so on a 48-inch tank the docking mounts are fully extended and the ends of the tank sit well beyond the light body. Expect the tank's ends to be dimmer than the middle. It rests on the rim with 2 adjustable docking mounts; Current USA sells separate rimless-tank mounts and a light-arm kit.
Output and controls: 50 W from 30 x 6,500K white, 14 RGB, and 8 x 660 nm red LEDs. Current USA describes it as producing high PAR for plant growth, but PAR figures are not on the product page we reviewed. The inline 24-hour timer and wireless remote handle programmable sunrise and sunset, day and moonlight color and intensity, 6 dynamic effects, 4 freshwater presets, and 2 custom memory slots.
Included: Light, 2 docking mounts, 12 V DC UL-certified transformer, 24-hour timer/controller, wireless remote, and instructions.
Maintenance: IP65 rated. Keep the controller's receiver clear of splashes so the remote keeps working.
Not listed: Fluval Plant 3.0, 46 W
The Fluval Plant 3.0 46 W (model 14522) is the largest Fluval Plant 3.0 size we cover. Its retail listing states 36 to 46 inches, while the manual states 36 to 48 inches. We use the narrower figure, so it tops out at about 46 inches and we do not list it for a 48-inch tank. If your tank measures under 46 inches, see our 40-gallon light picks, where it is a pick for the 36-inch 40 breeder. For a 48-inch tank, confirm fit with Fluval before buying.
Width: one fixture or two
A 55 gallon is narrow enough that one bar centered over the tank covers it reasonably. A 75 gallon is about 18 inches front to back, and a single narrow bar leaves the front and back further from the light. If you want carpets or demanding plants across the whole footprint of a 75, consider:
- Two fixtures side by side, one toward the front and one toward the back, each sized for the tank length.
- One fixture with the demanding plants placed under it, and shade-tolerant plants such as anubias, java fern, and crypts toward the edges.
Two lights also make it easier to balance output: you can dim each one and still cover the full width.
Required accessories and compatibility
- A timer, if you want more control. The Finnex presets and the Current USA timer handle daily schedules on their own. A plug-in timer helps if you want a custom photoperiod on the Finnex, or to switch lights and CO2 together; see the timers guide.
- Rimless tanks. Both picks rest on the rim with sliding mounts. On a rimless 48-inch tank, check how the mounts sit on bare glass; Current USA sells separate rimless mounts for the Satellite.
- Glass lids. If your tank has glass lids, the light sits above them, and lids lose some light. Keep them clean.
Alternatives and when to skip a new light
- Your tank is not about 48 inches long. Do not stretch a fixture past its listed range. See our 40-gallon and 20-gallon light picks, or the Plant lighting: what to check before you buy ↗ hub.
- Your current light already grows your plants. A timer may be the better upgrade.
- You want to compare brands size by size. Fluval Plant 3.0 vs Finnex Planted+ 3.0 covers both lines at each length, and the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 review covers the line in depth.
How we chose
- Compatibility first. Only catalog lights whose listed length range covers about 48 inches. Where published figures disagree, the catalog uses the narrower one, which is why the Fluval 46 W is not a pick.
- Identity confirmed against Amazon's official product data, matched to the manufacturer model or part number.
- Specifications from manufacturer documentation, listed in the sources.
- Only products rated 4 stars or higher on Amazon when checked. A screening filter, not a ranking.
- Research-based. We have not tested these products hands-on. There are no scores or rankings, and the order of the picks is not a ranking.
