Best Planted Tank Lights for 10-Gallon Aquariums (2026)

Two plant lights that fit the common 20-inch 10-gallon tank, compared by bracket range, controls, output at depth, and plant-specific design.

The short answer

For a standard 10-gallon tank, which is commonly about 20 inches long, the two lights below are listed by their makers to fit. Choose the Fluval Plant 3.0 22 W if you want a plant-specific light with an app-programmed 24-hour cycle and brackets that span 15 to 24 inches. Choose the Finnex Stingray 3.0 18 in if you want a simple inline timer and dimmer with no app, and you are keeping low- to moderate-light plants. Measure your tank first: the Stingray's listed range tops out at exactly 20 inches.

Who this guide is for

This guide is for keepers lighting a 10-gallon planted tank, whether a new setup or a replacement for the hood light that came in a kit. The common dimensions for a US glass 10-gallon are about 20 x 10 x 12 inches (length x width x height). These are common dimensions, not a standard. Manufacturers vary, and rimless or "low-profile" 10-gallon tanks can differ by an inch or more, so measure the actual length and water depth of your tank before you buy.

Length decides whether a fixture fits. Water depth decides how much light reaches the substrate. As Tropica puts it, light decreases considerably with the distance between the light source and the base of the tank. On a 12-inch-tall tank, the distance from the light to the substrate is usually a little under 12 inches once you account for substrate and the gap below the rim, which is shallow enough that modest fixtures can grow a wide range of plants.

The picks cover both low-tech tanks (no injected CO2, slower plants such as Anubias, Java fern, mosses, and many Cryptocoryne) and tanks where you may later add CO2. If you have not decided which path to take, our low-tech vs high-tech guide explains how that choice changes your lighting needs.

Exact model: Fluval Plant 3.0 Bluetooth LED, model 14520, the 22 W version for tanks 15 to 24 inches (38 to 61 cm). Fluval sells larger sizes under neighboring model numbers, so confirm 14520 when ordering for a 10-gallon.

Fit: The extendable brackets cover a 15 to 24 inch tank length per the Fluval manual, so a 20-inch tank sits comfortably in the middle of the range rather than at an edge. The brackets rest on the outside of the aquarium frame, and the manual states the fixture mounts on glass 3 to 15 mm thick. Check your glass thickness if you have a rimless tank.

Output and controls: Fluval lists 22 W, 1,450 lumens, and 99 LEDs. This is a plant-specific fixture. The touch switch gives off, all on, blue only, and manual dimming. A programmed 24-hour cycle, such as a gradual sunrise and sunset, is set through the FluvalSmart app over Bluetooth, so you need a phone with the app for scheduling. Without the app, a dimming level set at the switch stays fixed until you change it.

Accessories and maintenance: No separate timer is needed if you use the app. Wipe salt creep and condensation from the fixture and brackets during water changes. The LED light source is not replaceable, and Fluval lists a 3-year limited warranty and a rated LED life of 50,000 hours.

Exact model: Finnex Stingray 3.0, model VL-18S, the 18-inch version. Do not confuse it with the 12-inch VL-12S, which is listed for 12 to 16 inch tanks and does not fit a standard 10-gallon.

Fit: The fixture body is 17.48 inches long. We use a fit range of 18 to 20 inches, the narrower of two published figures (the retail listing says the legs fit 18 and 20 inch aquariums, while the Finnex dimension chart lists a longer maximum). A 20-inch tank is at the top of that range, so measure before ordering. It rests on the tank rim with sliding mounts, and no hanging kit is mentioned by the manufacturer.

Output and controls: This is a general-purpose fixture rather than a dedicated plant light: Finnex calls the Stingray 3.0 an all-purpose aquarium LED, and its published PAR is lower than the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 line. Finnex lists 60 umol/m2/s at 12 inches and 105 at 6 inches, and the spectrum includes 660 nm deep red LEDs. For a shallow 10-gallon with easy and moderate plants, that can be enough, but it is not aimed at demanding carpets or high-light stem plants. The inline controller gives 0 to 100 percent dimming, daylight and moonlight modes, and an automatic 24/7 Lunar+ cycle with 6, 9, or 12 hour timer presets, with no app needed.

Accessories and maintenance: No extra timer is needed unless you want a photoperiod other than the three presets, in which case a plug-in timer works. Keep the inline controller and power supply away from splashes. Finnex rates the LED board IP67 and lists a 50,000-hour LED life.

Alternatives and when to skip a new light

  • Your tank is not about 20 inches long. Some nano or rimless tanks sold near this volume are shorter or longer. If your length falls outside both ranges above, neither pick is a good fit; browse the lighting hub or read our lighting guide for how to match length and depth.
  • Your current light already grows your plants. If a kit light grows Anubias, Java fern, and mosses without heavy algae, there may be no need to replace it. Adding an external timer for a steady photoperiod is often the more useful upgrade; see our timers guide.
  • You want high light for carpets. Plan CO2 and fertilization alongside the light. A brighter fixture alone, without the carbon and nutrients to match, tends to favor algae.

How we chose

  • Compatibility first. A light made the list only if its maker-listed tank-length range covers the common 20-inch length of a 10-gallon tank. When the manufacturer chart and the retail listing gave different fit figures, we went with the narrower one.
  • Identity confirmed against Amazon's official product data, matched to the manufacturer's model number.
  • Specifications from manufacturer documentation, such as the Fluval instruction manual and the Finnex product and comparison pages listed in the sources.
  • Only products rated 4 stars or higher on Amazon when checked. This is a screening filter, not a ranking.
  • Research-based, not hands-on. We have not tested these products hands-on. There are no scores or rankings here; each pick suits a different need.
