Best Planted Tank Lights for 40-Gallon Aquariums (2026)
Plant lights matched to the 36-inch 40 breeder and the 48-inch 40 long, with notes on fit edges, width, depth, and controls.

"40 gallon" usually means one of two shapes. For a 40 breeder (commonly about 36 inches long and 18 inches front to back), the Fluval Plant 3.0 46 W suits app scheduling, the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 36 in suits a built-in timer with no app, the Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Pro suits remote-controlled color and sunrise/sunset programming, and the general-purpose Finnex Stingray 3.0 30 in suits low-tech plantings. For a 40 long (commonly about 48 inches), the Finnex Planted+ 3.0 48 in and the Current USA Satellite Plus Pro are listed to fit. Because a breeder is so wide, consider two fixtures for even coverage.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for keepers lighting a 40-gallon planted tank. The two common shapes need different fixtures:
| Tank | Common dimensions (L x W x H) | What it means for lighting |
|---|---|---|
| 40 gallon breeder | 36 x 18 x 16 in | Shorter but very wide; one narrow bar may leave the back dim |
| 40 gallon long | about 48 x 13 x 16 in | Long and narrow; length drives the choice |
These are common dimensions, not a standard. Brands and rimless versions vary, so measure your tank's outside length, front-to-back width, and water depth before ordering.
Both shapes are roughly 16 inches tall, deeper than a 20 long or a 10-gallon. Tropica notes that the amount of light decreases considerably with the distance from the light source to the base of the tank, and the effect shows in the corners. On a breeder the back corners are the furthest from a single center-mounted bar. Keepers who want carpets across the whole footprint often run two fixtures or one wider panel. If you buy one, place the demanding plants near the middle.
The picks suit low-tech and CO2-injected tanks. Our low-tech vs high-tech guide explains how that choice changes the light you need.

Exact model: Fluval Plant 3.0 Bluetooth LED, model 14522, 46 W.
Fit: We use 36 to 46 inches, the narrower of two published figures: Fluval's manual states 36 to 48 inches, while the retail listing states 36 to 46. A 36-inch breeder sits at the bottom edge, so confirm your length. Because of that discrepancy, we do not list it for a 48-inch 40 long; check with Fluval if you want to use it there. Brackets sit on the outside of the frame on glass 3 to 15 mm thick.
Output and controls: Fluval designs it for plants and lists 46 W, 3,300 lumens, and 252 LEDs. The touch switch handles on/off, blue only, and manual dimming; the 24-hour programmed cycle needs the FluvalSmart app.
Maintenance: The LED source is not replaceable. Fluval lists a 3-year limited warranty and a 50,000-hour rated LED life.

Exact model: Finnex Planted+ 3.0, model PL-36S.
Fit: The fixture body is 35.47 inches and reaches 45.47 inches with mounts extended per Finnex, which works out to tanks of roughly 36 to 45 inches. It does not reach a 48-inch 40 long. It rests on the rim with sliding mounts, and Finnex does not list a hanging kit.
Output and controls: Finnex designs this line for planted tanks and lists 45 W, PAR of 135 umol/m2/s at 12 inches and 80 at 18 inches, and 660 nm deep red LEDs. The inline controller gives 0 to 100 percent dimming, moonlight, and a 24/7 Lunar+ cycle with 6, 9, or 12 hour presets.
Maintenance: IP67 rated. Use a plug-in timer if you want a photoperiod outside the presets.

- PAR values not stated on the product page
Exact model: Current USA Satellite Freshwater LED Plus Pro, part 4012, the 36 to 48 inch size.
Fit: Listed for tanks 36 to 48 inches, so it covers both a breeder and a 40 long at the two ends of its range. The fixture itself is 34.8 x 3.5 x 0.44 inches, so on a 48-inch tank the docking mounts extend and the ends of the tank sit beyond the light body. It rests on the rim; Current USA sells separate rimless-tank mounts and a light-arm kit.
Output and controls: 50 W from 30 x 6,500K white, 14 RGB, and 8 x 660 nm red LEDs. Current USA describes it as producing high PAR for plant growth, but PAR figures are not on the product page we reviewed. The inline 24-hour timer and wireless remote handle sunrise/sunset, day and moonlight color and intensity, effects, and presets.
Maintenance: IP65 rated, with a 12 V DC UL-certified transformer. Keep the remote's receiver clear of splashes.

- Modest output for deep tanks (52 umol/m2/s at 18 in per Finnex)
Exact model: Finnex Stingray 3.0, model VL-30S.
Fit: The 29.49-inch body extends to 39.49 inches per Finnex, so a 36-inch breeder falls within the 30 to 39.5 inch range. It does not fit a 40 long.
Output and controls: A general-purpose fixture rather than a plant-specific light: Finnex calls the Stingray 3.0 an all-purpose aquarium LED, with lower PAR than the Planted+ line, 75 umol/m2/s at 12 inches and 52 at 18 inches. On a 16-inch-deep, 18-inch-wide breeder, treat it as a light for easy, low-light plants, or as a second bar alongside another fixture. Controls match the Planted+ 3.0.
Finnex Planted+ 3.0 (48 in): for a 40 long

- IP67 water-resistance rating
- Timer offers only 6, 9 or 12 hour presets
- No app or per-channel color control
Exact model: Finnex Planted+ 3.0, model PL-48S.
Fit: The fixture body is 46.26 inches, extending to 56.26 inches per Finnex, for a working fit of 47 to 56 inches. A 48-inch 40 long is near the bottom of that range. It does not fit a breeder.
Output and controls: The longest Planted+ 3.0 here, also built for planted tanks. Finnex lists 58 W and PAR of 145 umol/m2/s at 12 inches and 90 at 18 inches. Controls match the 36-inch model.
Maintenance: IP67 rated; add a plug-in timer for photoperiods outside the presets.
Alternatives and when to skip a new light
- Your tank is neither about 36 nor about 48 inches. Do not stretch a fixture past its listed range; see the lighting hub and our lighting guide.
- You want full-carpet coverage on a breeder. Plan for two fixtures, or a wider panel, rather than one narrow bar at full power.
- Your current light already grows your plants. A timer may be the better upgrade; see the timers guide.
How we chose
- Fit by length. A light qualified only if its published range covers the common 36-inch breeder or the 48-inch 40 long. Where Fluval's manual, Finnex's chart, or a retail listing gave conflicting figures, we went with the narrower range.
- Model numbers matched between Amazon's product data and the manufacturer's model or part number.
- Specs taken from Fluval, Finnex, and Current USA documentation, listed in the sources.
- Rated 4 stars or higher on Amazon when we checked. We used this to screen listings, not to order the picks.
- Research-based. We have not tested these lights hands-on, and we do not score or rank them.
