Best Aquascaping and Maintenance Tools for Planted Tanks (2026)
Planting tweezers and kits, magnetic glass cleaners matched to glass thickness, and siphons for water changes, each sized to the tank it suits.

For planting, the hygger HG030 kit covers the basics in one purchase: curved scissors, straight and curved tweezers, and a sand spatula. If you only need a precise straight tweezer, the JBL ProScape P30 is a single 30 cm tool. For glass cleaning, choose a magnet by glass thickness first. That's up to 3/16 in for the Mag-Float 30, up to 1/4 in for the Flipper Nano, up to 3/8 in for the Mag-Float 125, and 1/4 to 1/2 in for the Flipper Standard. For water changes, the Aqueon Mini 5 in suits 1 to 5 gal tanks, the Python Pro-Clean Small suits 10 to 20 gal, and the Python No Spill Clean and Fill drains and refills from a faucet within 25 ft.
Who this guide is for
This guide is for planted tank keepers putting together a basic tool set: tools to plant and trim, a magnet to keep the glass clear, and a siphon for water changes. Our essential aquascaping tools guide explains what each tool type does and which to buy first. The rule of thumb that matters most here is reach. A planting tool should reach the substrate at the back of the tank while your hand stays above the waterline.
Before buying, measure three things: the water depth, the glass thickness (check the maker's spec or measure an exposed edge), and the distance from the tank to the nearest sink.

It includes 9.8 in curved scissors, 10.6 in straight tweezers, 10.5 in curved tweezers, a 12.5 in sand spatula, an acrylic tool holder, and a cleaning cloth, plus a storage bag. The tools are stainless steel with a color oxidation finish, and the tips come with protective caps. A hygger blog post lists the scissors at 10.6 in, but we use the 9.8 in figure from the product page. Tools around 10 to 12.5 in suit shallow tanks. In a deep tank, check that they reach the back substrate. The kit doesn't include straight or wave scissors.

The P30 (6154800) is a single pair of straight planting tweezers. It's 30 cm long, weighs 78.3 g, and has cross-corrugated tips for gripping stems. JBL says it's made in Japan from stainless steel. JBL's FAQ notes that flash rust can still appear if the tools aren't rinsed and dried after use, even in freshwater, so dry it every time. You'll need to buy scissors and a spatula separately.
Glass cleaning
The magnet has to match your glass thickness. If it's too weak for thick glass, the inner piece falls off. If it's too strong for thin glass, it clamps hard and can be difficult to slide. For example, the UNS 5N and LANDEN 30C rimless nano tanks list 5 mm glass. Always confirm your own tank's spec.
- Best for
- Small glass planted tanks up to about 25 gal with glass up to 1/4 in thick.

- Floats if the magnets separate
- Glass tanks only, no acrylic blade
- Limited to glass up to 1/4 in thick
The Flipper Nano Float is for glass up to 1/4 in (6 mm) and tanks of about 25 gal. It's for glass tanks only, because the included stainless blade isn't safe for acrylic. You flip it between the scrubber and scraper by rotating the handle. It floats if the halves separate. Flipper's size guide says bowfront tanks should size up about 1/8 in, so a 1/4 in bowfront needs the Standard. Flipper recommends replacing the blade every 3 to 6 months.

- Blades are consumables, replaced every 3-6 months per the maker
The Standard Float works on glass or acrylic 1/4 to 1/2 in (6 to 12 mm) thick, and Flipper's collection page lists it for 30 to 150 gal tanks. It comes with two blades: stainless steel for glass and ABS plastic for acrylic. Use only the matching blade. It measures 5 x 2.5 x 1.7 in, which may be bulky in a small tank.

The Aqueon Mini has a 5 in self-priming intake tube and a 6 ft hose, and Aqueon rates it for 1 to 5 gal aquariums. You start the flow by moving the tube up and down, so you don't need to start it by mouth. A clip holds the hose on the bucket. Aqueon offers a 90-day warranty.

- Gravel and debris cleaning in 10-20 gal planted tanks during bucket water changes.
- Skip this if
- Your tank is over 20 gal or you want to drain straight to a sink.

- Rated only for 10-20 gal tanks
The Pro-Clean Small (12PC) has a 1 x 12 in gravel tube and a 72 in hose, and Python rates it for 10 to 20 gal tanks. The narrow tube is easier to work between plant groups. It drains into a bucket set below the tank. The same line includes a Mini (6PC, up to 10 gal), a Medium (10PC), a Large (16PC, 20 to 55 gal), and an XL (24PC, 55 gal and up). There's also a separate Small Tall (20PC, 1 x 20 in).

- Drains and refills the tank through one hose, with no buckets, per Python
- Complete kit: hose, gravel tube, switch, connectors, faucet pump and brass adapter
- Extensions and longer gravel tubes are available as separate parts
- Needs a compatible faucet; some faucets need a separately sold adapter
- No tank-size rating is published
- 25 ft hose may not reach a faucet from every tank location
The 25NS kit includes a 25 ft (7.5 m) hose, a gravel tube, a switch, connectors, a faucet pump, and a brass faucet adapter. It drains and refills the tank through one hose. Python doesn't give it a tank-size rating; your limit is whether the hose reaches a faucet. Longer kits (50NS to 100NS), 10 ft and 20 ft extensions, and longer gravel tubes are sold separately. So are adapters for faucets the included one doesn't fit. When refilling, match the water temperature and dose dechlorinator for the full tank volume.
Alternatives and when to skip buying
If you already have long kitchen tongs or a siphon that reaches your tank, upgrade only when a tool starts to limit you, such as a tweezer that can't reach the back of the tank. Old gift cards work as a glass scraper on glass tanks, though never on acrylic. Hold off on wave scissors until you actually have a carpet to trim. You can see more options on the Aquascaping tools: what to check before you buy ↗ hub, or use the setup finder to plan a complete setup.
How we chose
We matched every tool to its Amazon listing by brand, model and size. Lengths, glass-thickness ranges, hose lengths and tank ratings come from manufacturer pages, size guides and price lists. Where sources disagreed, we used the maker's product page and say so. A tool needed a rating of 4 stars or more on Amazon at the time we checked to be considered. The first filter was compatibility: tool reach, glass thickness and material, and tank size. We haven't tested these tools hands-on, and we don't rank or score them.
