FZONE Pro Dual Stage CO2 Regulator Review (2026)
A research-based look at the FZONE Pro Series dual stage CO2 regulator for CGA-320 cylinders: specs, fit, safety, required extras, and alternatives.

The FZONE Pro Series dual stage regulator suits a pressurized CO2 build on a standard North American CO2 cylinder with a CGA-320 valve, when you want steady output as the cylinder runs low and a 12 V DC solenoid you can put on a timer. Skip it if you are staying low-tech without injected CO2, or if you plan to run paintball or soda-machine cylinders, because FZONE does not state compatibility with either for this model.

This review covers the FZONE Pro Series Dual Stage CO2 Regulator, model FZ-2020Pro, CGA-320 version for North America. FZONE sells regulators with different cylinder connections for different regions, including a W21.8 version of its single stage model for Europe, so check that the listing names CGA-320 before you buy. CGA-320 is the threaded valve outlet used on standard US and Canadian CO2 cylinders, the kind you buy or fill at a welding or beverage gas supplier.

What these mean in practice:
- CGA-320 inlet. The regulator threads straight onto a standard CO2 cylinder valve with a CGA-320 outlet. It does not fit a paintball cylinder (which uses a different thread) or a soda-machine cylinder, and FZONE does not list an adapter for either on this model. FZONE's product page notes the cylinder connection has a built-in rubber O-ring.
- Dual stage. A regulator reduces cylinder pressure to a low working pressure. A dual stage design does that in two steps, which is generally done to keep output steadier as the cylinder empties. That matters because some single stage regulators can release a sudden surge of CO2 near empty (often called end-of-tank dump), which can harm fish and shrimp. FZONE does not make an end-of-tank claim for this model, so still check the bubble rate as the cylinder runs low.
- 12 V DC solenoid. The solenoid is the electric valve that turns gas flow on and off. FZONE states it works with automatic timers, so CO2 can switch on before the lights and off before they go out. FZONE also describes the 12 V DC design as quieter and more energy-efficient than a 120 V AC solenoid.
- Safety valve. It vents if working pressure goes above 100 PSI, which protects the downstream tubing and fittings.
- Needle valve. This sets the flow, down to about 1 bubble every 3 seconds, which suits smaller tanks.
- Gauges. One reads cylinder pressure and one reads working pressure.
Suitable setups
- High-tech planted tanks that use injected CO2 with a full-size refillable cylinder. Our CO2 system guide explains how the parts fit together.
- Tanks with livestock, where a dual stage design reduces the risk of a CO2 surge late in a cylinder's life.
- Builds run on a timer, using the 12 V DC solenoid.
If you are still deciding whether you need CO2 at all, read our low-tech vs high-tech guide first.
Strengths
- Dual stage design. Dual-stage regulators are generally built to keep output steadier as a cylinder empties; FZONE does not make an end-of-tank claim for this model.
- Built-in safety valve that releases above 100 PSI.
- 12 V DC solenoid for timer-controlled on and off.
- Two bubble counters included, so you can watch flow rate without buying one separately.
Limitations
- CGA-320 only. FZONE does not state paintball or soda-cylinder compatibility for this model.
- Not a complete kit. The cylinder, diffuser and CO2-resistant tubing are not in the listed package contents.
- No published working-pressure figure on the product page beyond the 100 PSI safety-valve threshold.
Compatibility and required extras
To run this regulator you also need:
- A CO2 cylinder with a CGA-320 valve, filled with CO2. Local welding and beverage gas suppliers commonly fill or swap these.
- A CO2 diffuser or inline reactor to dissolve the gas in the tank.
- CO2-resistant tubing, since ordinary airline tubing can let CO2 escape over time.
- A timer for the solenoid if you want automatic on and off. See our timers and lighting schedules guide.
- A drop checker is a common way to watch CO2 levels in the water.
Maintenance
- At each cylinder change, close the cylinder valve, inspect the O-ring at the CGA-320 connection, and recheck for leaks after reconnecting.
- Watch the cylinder gauge. Its reading tends to stay steady and then drop as the cylinder empties, so plan a refill when it starts falling.
- Check the bubble rate once a week, since needle valve settings can drift.
- Replace tubing if it hardens, cracks or kinks.
- Refill bubble counters with water or the liquid the manufacturer recommends as they evaporate.
Our maintenance routine guide fits these checks into a weekly schedule.
Alternatives
| Product | Fits | Best for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|
Model FZ-0100 | CO2 tanks | A budget pressurized build on a standard US CGA-320 cylinder with timer-controlled on/off. | You want dual-stage stability, or plan to use paintball or soda cylinders without an adapter. |
Model CO2J004 | CO2 tanks | A compact desktop or nano CO2 build that may use either a CGA-320 cylinder or paintball cylinders. | You need a regulator with fully published specifications or multiple manifold outputs. |
- FZONE Single Stage CO2 Regulator (CGA-320): choose this for a lower-cost build on the same CGA-320 cylinder with a 12 V DC solenoid and a built-in bubble counter, if you accept a single stage design without an end-of-tank-dump claim.
- UNS Mini Dual Stage CO2 Regulator: choose this for a compact nano or desktop build where you want the option of a CGA-320 cylinder, a paintball cylinder, or a UNS disposable cartridge, as stated by UNS. UNS publishes fewer detailed specifications.
For more options, see our CO2 regulators and kits picks and the CO2 systems equipment page.
Verdict
The FZONE Pro Series dual stage regulator is a reasonable match for a planted tank running a standard CGA-320 CO2 cylinder, especially one with fish or shrimp, where stable output as the cylinder runs low matters. Budget separately for the cylinder, diffuser and CO2-resistant tubing, and set it up with the safety steps above. If you want to use paintball cylinders or keep a nano build compact, the UNS Mini is the better fit; if cost matters more than dual stage stability, look at the FZONE single stage model.
